Is Genie+ worth it?

This is a question we asked ourselves before visiting Disney World in February 2022. Unfortunately we cannot say whether or not buying Genie+ would be worth it for your family, however we can provide some insight on what we learned.

What is the cost?

Currently Genie+ costs $15 per person per day. You can buy this ad-hoc on the morning of the day you want to use it or you can apply this to your tickets ahead of time.

Amendment - from the 8th June 2022 Disney World is no longer allowing you to add on Genie+ prior to your visit.

Currently if applying this to your tickets ahead of time it works out a lot cheaper. In the UK an adult 14 day ticket is currently from £469 (as of 17th May 2022), depending what dates you are going. You can apply Genie+ for £6.99 a day, however, you can only apply it to all days on the ticket, not just a specific day when doing it ahead of time. This then brings the cost of an adult 14 day ticket up to £566.86 in the lowest season and the equivalent for a child would be £546.86.

What do you get?

Genie+ gives you the ability to book arrival times for more than 40 attractions at Disney World. These bookings are what have replaced the old free FastPass+ system and are now called Lightning Lanes.

You also get access to Disney PhotoPass Lenses which are similar to filters on Instagram, Snapchat, etc... where something is added to your photo like Grogu or it will make you look like a character such as Genie.

How do you book Lightning Lanes?

These are booked on the My Disney Experience app on the day of your visit to the park from 7am.

When booking a Lightening Lane you will see all the attractions and the next time slot available for each. You will also see some attractions which state they are Individual Lightning Lane attractions which we will talk about later as these are an additional cost.

When selecting a Lightening Lane you cannot select a specific time, only the next available time and some of these attractions will go within minutes. You can only select one Lightning Lane at a time (apart from Individual lightning lanes which we will talk about later).

So you can only hold one Lightning Lane at a time? No!

It is true that when you book a Lightning Lane you can only book one at a time, however there is the 180 minute rule. This refers to the fact that you can book another Lightning Lane two hours after booking your previous one even if you haven't used your previous one yet.

Note - the two hours only starts counting once the park opens.

For example:

  • 7am - you log in and book a Lightning Lane on Haunted Mansion for 5pm.

  • If Magic Kingdom doesn't open until 9am you can then book another Lightning Lane at 11am (as this is two hours after the park has opened).

  • 11am - you book a Lightning Lane on Dumbo for 4pm, the two hours then starts counting again from the moment you booked that attraction so you can log in and get yet another one at 1pm.

  • 1pm - you log in and book another Lightning Lane,

Because of this rule you are able to have multiple Lightning Lanes booked, however when the parks are busy you may not be able to find any Lightning Lanes available.

What are Individual Lightning Lanes?

There are some attractions which Disney classify as 'premium' attractions and as such are not included in the cost of Genie+.

These are changeable, however, currently this would include rides such as Avatar: Flight of Passage, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, etc....

These rides do not have a specific cost to them and can fluctuate based on the season/crowd levels and will cost roughly between $7 to $15 per person per ride.

How do you book an Individual Lightning Lane?

These are booked in the same way as you would book normal Lightning Lanes, from 7am on the day of your visit to the park. There are a few notable differences when it comes to booking these.

  • You can only book up to two of these a day.

  • You can book both of them at 7am, you don't have to wait for two hours to book the second one.

  • You can select a time for your booking.

  • You have to pay for these separately.

This means at 7am on the morning of your visit you can have up to three attractions booked (one 'normal' Lightning Lane' and two Individual Lightning Lanes).

Hot tip - If you are planning on booking two individual Lightning Lanes it is best for two of you to book them at the same time, if possible, so one of you can be booking the first attraction while the other person can be booking the second one. This is because a ride can be fully booked within minutes and your second one may run out of time slots by the time you have booked your first one.

Conclusion

I mean, PLEASE bring back FastPass+ (we know it is never going to happen).

With the parks being a lot busier than they used to be, it can be quite difficult to get a big benefit out of Genie+, however, once we mastered the 180 minute rule we found we got a lot more out of it than we did at the beginning.

Amendment - from the 8th June 2022 Disney World is no longer allowing you to add on Genie+ prior to your visit.

If you apply Genie+ to your ticket ahead of time and you use it to its fullest every day then we would say it is worth it as you are saving money by doing this. If you are only going to use it on a few days then it would be better to just buy it on an ad-hoc basis as this will save some money and we all know Disney is expensive so you've got to save it where you can!

Note - if buying it on an ad-hoc basis, make sure your card is linked to your My Disney Experience so you can buy it for that day quickly at 7am so you can start booking them right away.
